Carbiotix AB (publ) announced that the company has signed its first NutraCycle Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with a leading Nordic plant-based food & beverage producer. The JDA follows a successful Pre-Study consisting of both laboratory and pilot scale verification of a new Carbersol process and prebiotic. The Joint Development phase will include process development, process engineering and product formulation work and will be carried within the next 6 months with the goal of making a decision on building a Carbersol process.

NutraCycle is a distributed upcycling service recently launched by Carbiotix. The service targets plant-based food & beverage, ingredient and feed producers interested in cost-effectively manufacturing their own Carbersol complex soluble fiber prebiotic ingredients on-site from side stream products typically sent to animal feed or disposal. These prebiotic ingredients can be used to fortify new and existing more healthy products or be sold off-site, and the waste streams that remain grow in value.

The NutraCycle service also reduces the need for added sugars, texturizers and other additives, and can in some cases increase the value of the side stream product from the Carbersol extraction, by concentrating the amount of protein for further product enrichment. Carbiotix provides complete end-to-end support with regards to developing a suitable process to extract Carbersol and other active ingredients, characterizing and validating a prebiotic, process engineering, product formulation work, and operational optimization. This work is divided into three phases; Pre-Study, Joint Development, and Service Support through a royalty and service agreement.

The benefits of the NutraCycle service are manyfold and include, among other things, higher pricing power, new revenue streams, lower cost for raw materials, more effective use of raw materials, and higher valued residuals. The aim of the NutraCycle service is to help future proof a business, increase competitiveness, improve the health of a product portfolio and people, and simply offer a more sustainable upcycling model than the current model of centralized upcycling.
