(Alliance News) - Avio Spa announced Wednesday that Vega C has been selected to launch the Kompsat-6 - Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite for Earth Observation on behalf of the Korea Aerospace Research Insititute - KARI.

The launch is scheduled for no earlier than December 2024 from the Guyana Space Center in French Guiana.

Kompsat-6 is the second SAR - synthetic aperture radar - technology satellite developed by KARI. It will replace its predecessor, Kompsat-5, taking advantage of a superior capability to process radar images. Kompsat-6 will be able to be used for applications such as mapping, GIS, environmental and disaster monitoring as well as land and ocean resource management and maritime traffic management.

Avio CEO Giulio Ranzo commented, "This contract once again demonstrates the versatility of the Vega C due to its increased payload capacity in both volume and weight. We thank KARI for the trust placed in our company and our launcher and Arianespace for the teamwork done together."

Avio's stock is up 0.3 percent at EUR9.56 per share.
