AMAG and ImWind conclude pioneering long-term power supply agreement from wind power
  • AMAG and ImWind conclude one of the largest Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) for renewable energy in Austria
  • At the Ranshofen site, 20 percent of the current annual electricity demand will be covered by wind power from ImWind in the future
  • AMAG consistently continues its commitment to decarbonisation and a responsible value chain
  • Start of a long-term partnership between AMAG and the Lower Austrian wind power pioneer

Pioneering partnership in the name of decarbonisation: Austria's leading aluminium producer AMAG Austria Metall AG and wind power pioneer ImWind from Lower Austria have signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The long-established Upper Austrian company has secured clean green electricity for its headquarters in Ranshofen, Upper Austria, for the next 15 years. This will cover 20 per cent of the current annual electricity requirement.

With this step, AMAG is preparing for increasing electricity demand due to decarbonisation and is thus also securing its supply. The company has been purchasing green electricity in Ranshofen since 2018. The agreement enables AMAG to secure green electricity procurement for this share in the long term.

The green electricity is produced by three new wind turbines from ImWind, which will go into operation at the end of 2024. With an output of 18 megawatts (MW), the plants can avoid more than 26,000 tonnes of CO2 compared to conventional electricity generation, which corresponds to the CO2 emissions of more than 10,000 cars per year. The conclusion of the PPA underlines AMAG's sustainability strategy and represents the next step in the company's decarbonisation roadmap.

"The groundbreaking partnership between AMAG and ImWind is a milestone on the path to decarbonization. With the long-term PPA, AMAG secures clean green electricity for the Ranshofen site, sending a clear signal for sustainable energy supply. The uptake of renewable electricity from three new wind turbines from ImWind will drive forward the achievement of our decarbonization goals. This partnership underscores our commitment to a green future and demonstrates that we are determined to make a significant contribution to climate protection," says Helmut Kaufmann, CEO and CTO of AMAG Austria Metall AG.

"The successful implementation of this PPA is a milestone for ImWind and underlines our commitment to a sustainable energy future and the expansion of renewable energies in Austria. Through the partnership with AMAG, we not only demonstrate our ability to develop innovative solutions for the green transformation but also strengthen the competitiveness of our industry. We are convinced that such alliances are crucial to secure the economic location of Austria and drive forward the decarbonization of our industry," says Georg Waldner, CEO of ImWind.
