The Labor Department announced that 215,000 new US jobless claims were registered for the week ending May 13, down 8,000 on the previous week, which was revised upwards from 222,000 to 223,000.

The four-week moving average - more representative of the underlying trend - came in at 219,750, an anecdotal increase of 1,750 on the previous week.

Finally, the number of people receiving regular benefits rose by 8,000 to 1,794,000 during the week of April 29, the most recent period available for this statistic.
