The Labor Department announced that 222,000 new U.S. jobless claims were registered for the week ending May 6, down 10,000 on the previous week, when the figure was revised upwards from 231,000 to 232,000.

The four-week moving average - more representative of the underlying trend - came in at 217,750, an anecdotal increase of 2,500 on the previous week.

Finally, the number of people receiving regular benefits rose by 13,000 to 1,794,000 during the week of April 29, the most recent period available for this statistic.
