President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro's leftist rival who took office on January 1 after a narrow October election win, promised to bring those responsible for the violence to justice, after demonstrators broke windows and furniture, destroyed art work and stole guns and artifacts.

Members of the Brazilian military dismantled tents set up by supporters of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday (January 9), ahead of a deadline for protesters to leave the encampment near Brasilia's army headquarters.

The Brazilian government provided buses for the protesters to leave before a 1200 local (1500GMT) deadline.
