In commodities, Brent crude fell 1% to $85.54 a barrel, and WTI crude dropped 1.1% to $78.84 a barrel.

The German 10-year Bund yield climbed by 2.7 basis points to 2.394% from 2.367% and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury climbed by 0.7 basis points to 3.744% from 3.738%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Stocks in Asia were mixed as Japan's Nikkei 225 index was down 0.9%, whereas Hong Kong's Hang Seng was lower 0.1%. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite climbed 0.7%.
