The New Brunswick Division of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) will undertake an initiative aimed at improving competitiveness and supplier readiness in the New Brunswick metalworking sector, thanks to investments by the Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick.

The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for New Brunswick and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), along with Robert Goguen, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe, and the Honourable Bruce Fitch, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for Invest New Brunswick, joined CME NB Division officials to make the announcement today.

The project involves a Supply Chain Improvement Initiative for the New Brunswick metalworking sector, including a supplier readiness assessment component targeting companies in the province.

The federal government, through ACOA's Business Development Program, is investing $204,690 and the Province of New Brunswick is investing $50,000 in the initiative.

Quick Facts

• The project will assist companies to identify key areas for improvement within their own operations in order to better prepare themselves to be competitive suppliers.
• The initiative will help increase industry awareness and insight into fabrication opportunities within global supply chains.
• To lead the implementation of this project, CME will retain the services and expertise of Hatch Inc., a global engineering, procurement, construction and management firm, well-established in the global market of major mining and energy projects.

"Our Government's support will help to ensure that New Brunswick's metalworking industry remains competitive and ready to seize new opportunities, like those stemming from shipbuilding and the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Assistance provided to participating companies will help them to gain the knowledge, technology and certifications required to pursue opportunities in major projects where need currently outstrips supply."

- The Honourable Bruce Fitch, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for Invest New Brunswick

"New Brunswick's metal working operations have a long history of servicing heavy industries, and they are well positioned to take advantage of opportunities related to major projects around the globe. Typically, contracts for these projects are valued at millions of dollars, and can keep people working for months.  This initiative is designed to assist our metal working operations, and their partner firms, fill niches in the supply chains of large industrial projects."
