The firm was founded in 1988 as a partnership between Banco BPI SA (XL: BPI), Credit Lyonnais, IFC, 3i and other private investors. In 1995, Inter-Risco became a wholly-owned subsidiary and venture capital arm of BPI following the bank's acquisition of all shares. In 2009, Inter-Risco became independent following an MBO led by the firm's management team of Afonso de Barros, Isabel Sousa and Rui Pedro Coelho Mota. The firm is the investment manager of several private equity funds.
