It's an old, but oft-repeated myth in the world of business that you can't be both financially successful and environmentally conscious. Particularly in traditionally wasteful industries like hospitality.

But it simply isn't true. Today there are numerous companies with sustainable, environmentally-friendly laundry operations that can be a model to the rest of the industry.

The Eco Laundry Company

This dry cleaning and wash and fold company has been making waves in the world of laundry since they first opened in Argentina in 2010. Two years later their first U.S. location opened in New York City.

In 2013, The Eco Laundry Company became the first laundromat and dry cleaning business to be a certified B Corporation-a for-profit company certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

The Hilton Los Angeles

In the midst of California's five-year drought, the Hilton LA/Universal City Hotel cut water usage in their laundry operation by a whopping 81%, implementing new laundry machines that use only.48 gallons of water per pound of laundry. The hotel is now saving more than 2 million gallons of water annually, and saving thousands of dollars in operating costs.

Catalina Laundry and the Avalon Hotel

On Catalina Island, a desert island off the coast of California, fresh water is in short supply during normal conditions. Rock Gosselin owns two businesses on the island, Catalina Laundry-the only commercial laundry on the island-and the Avalon Hotel, both of which require fresh water for day-to-day operations.

Seeing that need, Gosselin implemented a water reclamation system in 1991, and is utilizing low water washing machines to ensure that his businesses thrive and the island's precious fresh water is conserved.

The same drought that drove the Hilton LA and Catalina's hospitality businesses to seek out more sustainable options for laundry affected hotels and other businesses all across California. Their success stories have proved to business owners around the world that conservation is not just good for the environment, but good for business.
