BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) _ Whirlpool Corp. (WHR) on Monday reported fourth-quarter profit of $288 million.

The Benton Harbor, Michigan-based company said it had profit of $4.52 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $4.91 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $4.30 per share.

The maker of Maytag, KitchenAid and other appliances posted revenue of $5.38 billion in the period, missing Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $5.53 billion.

For the year, the company reported net income of $1.18 billion, or $18.45 per share, swinging to a profit in the period. Revenue was reported as $20.42 billion.

Whirlpool expects full-year earnings in the range of $16 to $17 per share.

Whirlpool shares have increased 0.5% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has stayed nearly flat. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $148.27, a rise of 19% in the last 12 months.
