Viadeo survey: Members of the professional social network rank Ukraine Crisis as the most memorable event of 2014

While it is no easy task to pin down precisely what it is that makes certain stories affect us more than others, it is clear that the French people were transfixed by international news in 2014. Here we take a look at the moments that had the greatest impact.

With the New Year upon us, Viadeo, France's leading professional social network, recently surveyed members to find out what stood out most for them in 2014. With a whole host of global news stories playing out in real-time online throughout the year, the French public kept a close eye on a wide range of events.

When asked "Which event stood out for you in 2014?":[1]

  • 32% answered "the Ukraine Crisis"
  • 31%: "the World Cup in Brazil"
  • 20%: "robotic lander Philae's arrival on the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko"
  • 12%: "the 70th anniversary of D-Day"
  • 3%: "the Sochi Winter Olympics"
  • 2%: "the European elections"

Olivier Fécherolle, Viadeo's Chief Strategy and Development Officer, offered his thoughts on the findings: "These results show that, despite the crisis, members of our network weren't simply glued to negative news stories or those that affected them directly. Rather, they remained keen to follow events beyond France and to follow scientific and technological developments, with the Philae story being a perfect example of the unbelievable accomplishments made last year."
