Power Supply Interruption

Areas affected by a power supply interruption that occurred at about 1.15 a.m.

Areas affected by a power supply interruption that occurred at about 1.15 a.m. today are now back on supply. All customers were back on supply by 9.00 a.m. except for a few isolated areas in and around Nairobi City.

The supply interruption occurred due to a fault on the transmission line between Olkaria sub-station and Nairobi-North sub-station at about 1.15 am this morning, when power supply to all customers except those in West Kenya was interrupted.

Due to the fault, power supplied from Olkaria geothermal power stations was disconnected from the rest of the transmission and distribution system, causing an imbalance between demand and supply, and hence the outage.

The power supply system in West Kenya disconnected from the rest of the national system and remained on with power from Sondu, Sangoro and Turkwel power stations as well as supply from Uganda.

The affected line was energised and operated normally. Kenya Power system engineers are analysing system logs to focus on the actual cause of the temporary fault that caused the supply interruption.

Kenya Power regrets the inconvenience caused to customers by the outage.
