US retailer Target announced on Thursday that it plans to deploy a new generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tool to simplify the task of its store employees.

The application, dubbed 'Store Companion', is a chatbot designed by Target's own technology teams, with the aim of answering common questions asked by its employees.

They can ask, for example, 'how do I create a loyalty card for a customer' or 'how do I restart my cash register after a power cut', and receive precise instructions in a matter of seconds.

The tool is due to be deployed on devices used by several hundred thousand employees by August, within some 2,000 points of sale.

Target, which says it is the first US retailer to implement such an initiative, says it is continuing to develop and test new AI tools that can accelerate its growth.

Following these announcements, the stock rose by more than 0.2% on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, compared with a 0.1% rise for the S&P 500 index.
