Strengthening Efforts for Respecting Human Rights

TOKYO, May 29, 2023 --- Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc (President and Group CEO: Jun Ohta, hereinafter the Group is collectively referred to as "SMBC Group") will strengthen our efforts to respect human rights.

SMBC Group believes respecting human rights is a duty that every company must fulfill. SMBC Group has identified human rights as one of its priority issues (Materiality), and aims to prevent and mitigate the negative impact that it can have on human rights actors. At the same time we will be striving to secure trust by fulfilling our responsibility to respect human rights and create a positive impact on society. Therefore, SMBC Group revised its Statement on Human Rights and issued its first SMBC Group Human Rights Report.

１．Revision of "Statement on Human Rights"

In 2017, SMBC Group issued its Statement on Human Rights

expressing its commitment to respect human rights. This statement is continuously being reviewed, and we have recently revised it in light of the growing expectations towards companies regarding their responsibility to respect human rights and the sophistication of our internal human rights due diligence efforts.

２．Publishment of "SMBC Group Human Rights Report"

In line with the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 2011, this report describes the Group's efforts to respect human rights of its clients, suppliers and employees. SMBC Group is also committed to enhance its corporate value by appropriately managing risks, related to human rights within its own business.

SMBC Group will continue to strive to upgrade its efforts and fulfill its responsibility to respect human rights and contribute to the accomplishment of a sustainable society.

The Japanese version of this Report is now published. The English version will be published in mid or late June.
