Two first half strikes from Oguchi Onyewu sunk the visiting Beira-Mar to a 2-0 loss in Alvalade on Sunday.

A kind fixture list which handed an afternoon kick-off to the Lions brought just under 40,000 to Lisbon for the game and Sporting certainly didn't disappoint, playing attacking football right from the off.

The height of Onyewu proved the decisive factor, with the towering American converting on two dead ball situations in the opening half an hour.

Domingos Paciência made a total of three changes to his starting XI which played in Olhão last weekend, with Rodriguez coming in for Polga, Elias coming back from injury and Seba Ribas being given the nod in place of Carrillo. Beira-Mar didn't look particularly threatening for most of the first half, but the occasional stray Sporting pass did see the visitors break forward.

Beira-Mar came dangerously close to pulling one back at the start of the first half, as Zhang smashed a shot into Patrício's cross bar. Domingos responded by bringing on Carrillo (Jeffrén), André Santos (Renato Neto) and André Martins (Matías) and Sporting took control of long spells of possession. Nildo hit the post for Beira-Mar in the dying stages, but a Sporting win never really looked in doubt.
