RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Lonsum has established a solid in-house research and development (R&D) capability that helps to position the Company as a leading plantation company. Sumatra Bioscience (SumBio), the Company's research center in North Sumatra, features state-of-the-art research facility for soil, plant tissue, fertilizer, palm oil and latex analysis, as well as facilities in tissue culture, genetics, biotechnology and plant cytology.

Sumbio also runs facilities to develop and produce superior oil palm seeds with higher crop yields, low production cost; therefore it can give better returns
to planters.

Research activities are supported by field trial programs to evaluate new ideas and planting materials in statistically designed field trials before being implemented to enhance the Company's standard agriculture operating procedures. Changes in agricultural procedures are continuously monitored and revised with the full support of Lonsum's estate staff.

Lonsum's R&D activities focus on the following key areas - Agronomy, Crop Protection, Plant Breeding & Statistics, and Data Management & Geographic Information Systems.
