Protect Your Natural Gas Meter from Winter Hazards

THE DALLES, Ore. - As temperatures remain low in the Columbia Gorge, NW Natural (NYSE:NWN) reminds customers that winter weather can bring heavy snow and ice which can damage natural gas meters.

'Ice and snow accumulation can potentially damage gas equipment,' said Mark Lilly, director of Utility Field Services. 'But there are easy steps our customers can take to prevent this from happening.'

Tips to guard against potential damage:

- Clear snow or ice from roofs or other structures above the meter or appliances that may cause damage when falling.

- Use a broom, instead of a shovel or sharp object, to clear snow or ice from natural gas meters and outdoor appliances.

- Locate your meter before shoveling or plowing, and don't pile snow on or up against the equipment.

- Natural gas appliances require proper exhaust and ventilation. Know the location of outside air supply and exhaust ducts, and keep them free of snow, ice, leaves, or other debris. Keeping vents clear can prevent the accumulation of carbon monoxide in buildings.

- Make sure to install and properly maintain a working carbon monoxide detector.
