Sports Desk, Apr 30 (EFE).- In Premier League action on Sunday, Liverpool downed Tottenham Hotspur 4-3, Manchester City got the better of Fulham on the road 2-1, Manchester United blanked Aston Villa 1-0 and it was Newcastle over Southhampton 3-1.

Tottenham Hotspur fought back hard and steadily in Sunday's outing against home team Liverpool after a chaotic and gut-wrenching first half at Anfield in which the visitors initially found themselves down 3-0 in the first 15 minutes of play in an appalling breakdown in defense.

Things unraveled early on for Tottenham as Curtis Jones got the hosts on the board just three minutes into the action, with Luis Diaz making it 2-0 a couple of minutes later and then Mohamed Salah putting Liverpool up 3-0 on a penalty kick at the 15-minute mark.

After the stunning start, however, at about the 30-minute mark Tottenham began to buckle down and five minutes before the break Harry Kane at last got one past Alisson and put the visitors on the board, where matters rested until minute 78, when it was Son Heung-min hitting for the 3-2 and then Richarlison finding the twine on a header for what seemed to be the final tally in a 3-3 contest.

However, Diogo Jota - in for Luis Diaz - capitalized on a mistake by Lucas Moura just before the final whistle to beat Fraser Forster in the net with the game winning strike, vaulting Liverpool over Tottenham and into the No. 5 spot on the table.

With the win, Liverpool sees its chances of qualifying for Europe play back within reach, although they are seven points behind No. 4 Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Manchester City extended its winning streak and Erling Haaland equalled the record as top Premier League scorer in a single season with a 2-1 road win over Fulham at Craven Cottage in London.

The win put City back at the top of the Premier League table for the first time since February, having played one game less than former league leaders Arsenal.

Haaland hit on a penalty kick just three minutes into play for his 34th goal of the season, putting him even with Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

Carlos Vinicius evened things up for No. 10 Fulham in minute 15, but then it was City again manufacturing a string of good chances.

Jack Grealish hit the crossbar on one of those tries, but then in the 36th minute Julian Alvarez got one past Bernd Leno to make it 2-1 for the visitors with a nice shot from outside the area.

Although City could not get another goal on the board during the second half, and suffered through some jittery sequences as Fulham tried to battle back, they were still able to deny the hosts for their eighth consecutive Premier League victory, giving themselves 76 points and sending them out in front of Arsenal.

And Manchester United tightened its grip on qualifying for the Champions League with a shot by Bruno Fernandes that brought Aston Villa's 10-game unbeaten streak to a close before some 80,000 fans at Old Trafford.

Fernandes got the ball past Emiliano Martinez in the 38th minute for the lone goal of a contest in which Erik ten Hag's squad was determined to break their 3-match losing streak to Villa.

Casemiro fired a shot on goal that hit the crossbar but then Marcus Rashford was denied by Martinez only to have Fernandes pick up the gauntlet and fire one home for the tally.

Although Douglas Luiz tried a shot on goal late in the day, Unai Emery's men could not answer back throughout the remainder of play.

The win kept United in the No. 4 spot with 63 points, while Aston Villa is in seventh place with 54.

Finally, Newcastle drubbed Southhampton 3-1 although the visiting squad had gotten on the board first in minute 42 when Stuart Armstrong hit the net at St. James Park.

But then, the home team answered back in fine style with two of their three subsequent tallies coming from Callum Wilson, the final result keeping Newcastle in third place on the table and almost certain to qualify for Champions League play, nine points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

Although Southhampton drew blood early, they remain down at the very bottom of the table facing almost certain relegation with five losses in their last six outings.

Newcastle, in contrast, has won eight of their last nine matches and is trying to fend off Manchester United, which is two points back, for third place.

Wilson - coming off the bench - scored his 14th goal of the season in the 55th minute on a pass from Aleksander Isak, then had a goal nullified for offside in minute 73 upon VAR analysis.

Theo Walcott scored an own goal by deflecting Sven Botman's shot into the Saints' net in minute 79 putting Newcastle ahead and then it was Wilson again a minute later for the final tally.
