Chip-equipment maker Lam Research Corp. on Wednesday reported a rise in second-quarter profit, benefiting from higher revenue.

For the quarter ended Dec. 27, the company earned profit of $869.2 million, or $5.96 a share, compared with $514.5 million, or $3.43, for the same period last year, beating analyst consensus forecast of $5.63, taken from FactSet.

Excluding items, Lam Research reported an adjusted profit of $6.03 a share for the quarter, compared analysts forecasts of $5.72.

Sales rose to $3.46 billion from $2.58 billion.

Looking ahead to the quarter ended March 28, the company said it expects revenue to be between $3.5 billion and $3.9 billion, while earnings per share is expected to be between $6.07 and $6.87.

"With strong secular demand for semiconductors driving increased wafer fabrication equipment spending, Lam enters 2021 with solid momentum for continued growth and expanded leadership across our markets," President and Chief Executive Tim Archer said.
