Ramping up operations at Kupang

Welcome to the second edition of the Gulf Gazette -

Gulf's newsletter for staff, local Communities and Stakeholders. Activity levels are set to increase at Kupang considerably, not only due to construction, but also recruiting and training the right people in preparation for operating the smelter.

Refurbishment of the furnace equipment in South Africa has been completed, and is now ready for shipment. The rewinding of the transformers is progressing well and they will be ready for shipment in early in 2018. Work is now progressing to finalise the shipping arrangements for the furnaces to depart Durban in January 2018.

Power supply has been secured at Kupang, with an MOU signed with PT PLN (Persero) for 20 MVA power supply.

"The 2017 calendar year has been one of transformation for Gulf.

"We have secured additional funding and are well-placed to execute key outcomes in the New Year. 2018 is shaping up to be a watershed year for Gulf.

"On behalf of the Gulf Manganese board and staff, we wish you and your family a happy festive period."

Following the recent securing of additional funding support from key investors, Gulf is in a strong financial position to execute a number of key milestones next year.

Teaching English to local children

In talking to his neighbours, PT Gulf director John Woodacre discovered that the children were not applying the English they were learning at school.

PT GMG purchased books for the children so that they could practice between sessions.

At the first lesson there were just 6 children but the class size has now grown to an average of 15.

Gulf donate to Mt Agung relief

When Gunung Agung reached alert level 4, over 100,000 people were evacuated. As a result, there was a need for basic goods such as food, nappies and formula.

PT GMG staff responded with generous donations and the goods were purchased and delivered to the major camp at Klunkung.

Many thanks to Bondan and Kadek of the Dead Fish warung in Sanur for their assistance.

Spotlight on Paul Robinson, Chief Operations Officer, Kupang

With over 25 years of operational experience in smelting and refining, Paul's career has been a journey through many different parts of Australia.

Although based in Kupang, Paul finds time to get back to Perth for important family events with his wife and two daughters.

After he retired from football, he took up running which then progressed to a love of cycling as a means to maintain fitness.

Paul sees his role at Gulf Manganese as a rare and exciting opportunity to be involved in such a substantial project at an early stage.

"[We are] utilising one of the best raw material resources to build a smelting operation that will produce a product that will be one of the most sought after products by steel makers across the world."

"It's a massive project for West Timor and the local community," says Paul. "It's a rare opportunity to be involved in and I feel very lucky. I'm enjoying it."

Gulf management meet with West Kupang Camat

Yusak Ulin is the Camat of West Kupang in which the Smelting Hub is situated.

The Kecematan is similar to a local shire in Australia and the Camat is the leader of that area and deals with all local government issues.

Pak Yusak has been tremendously helpful in PT GMG's relationship with the localcommunities.
