Eversource investment will modernize and strengthen the grid

MANCHESTER, N.H. (January 8, 2018) - Work to modernize Eversource's Messer Street substation will continue this week with the delivery of a new transformer that will enhance reliability for thousands of customers in the Laconia area. A replacement for aging electrical equipment, the new transformer complements significant upgrades to the substation, including the installation of new automation technology-or smart switches-that will enhance the ability of Eversource's system operators to remotely isolate trouble spots and reroute power to customers. These upgrades are part of Eversource's ongoing efforts to support economic development and a clean energy future in the Granite State.

"The project to modernize our Messer Street substation is just one of the many investments we are making to ensure a more modern, more reliable electric system," said Eversource NH Vice President of Electric Operations Joe Purington. "Making our delivery network even more reliable and flexible is critical to ensuring that we can solve the future energy needs of our customers and integrate new renewable energy sources and energy storage in the future."

The transformer is scheduled to travel from Hooksett to its new home in Laconia on January 10, weather permitting. The new transformer, smart switches and other upgrades to the substation will help to reduce the duration and number of customers affected by power outages.

As part of its extensive community outreach efforts, Eversource has worked closely with the City of Laconia throughout the project, providing frequent updates and information, as well as coordinating temporary closures to the boat launch on the property. The energy company has also coordinated the transportation route with the NH Department of Transportation and the Laconia Department of Public Works. The project to modernize the substation is expected to be complete this summer.
