Several passengers were feared dead when an 18-seater bus believed to be travelling from Kaduna to Enugu collided with a tipper at Opi-Nsukka in Enugu State.

The tipper was said to be laden with sand and coming in the opposite direction.

An eye witness said the tipper's back tyre pulled off, with the driver losing control and ramming into the on-coming bus.

The number of the dead could not be confirmed, but eyewitness feared that there may be no survivors.

Police spokesman Ebere Amaraizu, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), confirmed the crash.

He said their bodies were deposited in a mortuary.

The mangled bus was seen at the accident scene, with the inscription: DIMET 015.
