Your cloud journey can be viewed through several lenses. There is the financial lens - where the cloud is seen as a means to drive down costs. The business lens - where it can help you be more agile and responsive to customer needs and market movements. And the strategic lens, where the cloud is the foundation for continuous business transformation. One can certainly look through a single lens at a time. But the entire picture becomes more evident when you look at the cloud and what it can do for your business as a whole.

Cost certainly plays heavily into moving to or scaling on the cloud. But it may not be clear as to how it plays. Indeed, the case can be made to lift-and-shift workloads to the cloud, but in a highly virtualized on-prem environment, the economics to move to the cloud may not be what you would expect. If you were to solely lift-and-shift, costs might go up due to over-provisioning. Then there are the licensing costs of software to consider. We have seen software vendors wield their market power to drive up software costs for decades.

Now organizations have a great deal more choice and flexibility. As you consider the costs of cloud computing, ask yourself this:

  1. What are we paying for on-prem software today?
  2. How can we optimize software costs, leveraging the ever-changing programs of enterprise software vendors?
  3. What are we paying for our proprietary database licensing costs today, and can we find a path to modernize onto a modern open cloud database infrastructure or managed service?
  4. If you've already migrated to the cloud- Do we have the optimal cloud architecture in place to support the business's demands now and into the future?

The rate and pace of innovation coming out of the cloud providers is genuinely remarkable. Each year Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are delivering new services and solutions to leapfrog the other competitors. That means that your IT team will have an ever-expanding palate of cloud services to offer the business to drive innovation. The challenge is understanding and staying ahead of them, so you can assess which will be the most impactful to your company as you progress on your cloud journey. Having an objective technology partner that is well versed in all the major cloud providers and the innovation they deliver becomes invaluable in your cloud journey!
