Algoma Central Corp. plans to install feshwater exhaust gas scrubbers on six new ships. They will remove an estimated 97% of the sulphur oxide emissions generated by the engines. The six scrubber systems, costing $12 million, will be supplied by the Finnish Wartsila shipbuilding and engineering group and fitted to Algoma's Equinox class vessels under construction by Nantong Mingde Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. in China. They will also allow shipowners to use lower-cost heavy fuel oils while meeting new Emission Control Area sulphur limits set by the International Maritime Organization and adopted by Canada and the United States for the Great Lakes and coastal waters.
