airberlin technik to maintain Etihad Airways aircraft in Düsseldorf

On the back of the recent launch of direct Etihad Airways flights from Abu Dhabi to Düsseldorf, and last month's historic deal between the United Arab Emirates flag carrier and Germany's second largest airline, airberlin technik - the technical wing of airberlin - continues to grow its maintenance customer base.

At Düsseldorf, airberlin technik will be responsible for the transit check on Etihad Airways' Airbus A330 three-class aircraft. Likewise, Etihad Airways will be responsible for undertaking transit checks on airberlin aircraft in Abu Dhabi.

"We are pleased to announce the contract with our new strategic partner Etihad Airways and look forward to working with an airline, recognised for its excellent customer service. This is further proof of the wide spectrum of customer-orientated solutions in the area of line maintenance offered by airberlin technik," stated Tobias Hundhausen, Senior Vice President Production of airberlin technik.

Etihad Airways Senior Vice President Technical, Werner Rothenbaecher, stated: "This reciprocal agreement will see airberlin technik undertaking maintenance of Etihad Airways aircraft in Düsseldorf. In Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways will be responsible for all transit checks on airberlin aircraft. We look forward to working closely with our colleagues in airberlin technik over the coming months and years."

With its maintenance workforce of 1,162 employees, Düsseldorf is airberlin technik's largest facility. Two hangars cover a total area of 29,000 m² and provide space for up to four widebody or 12 narrowbody aircraft.

airberlin technik GmbH (abt) is the aviation technology division within the airberlin group and the main provider of maintenance services for the group's aircraft. The company has around 1,800 employees working at 16 locations in Germany and in other countries and provides almost all aviation technical services. Its customers include not only the airberlin group but also a steadily growing number of major German and international airlines. As an approved aviation technology company with EASA Part-145 certification, airberlin technik GmbH provides accredited maintenance in line with the highest international quality standards. The most recent milestone in the company's history was the merger of AB aviation technology operations under the umbrella of airberlin technik GmbH on 1 April 2011. A further important step will be the move of its operations from Berlin-Tegel airport to the new Berlin airport. Construction work on a new maintenance hangar on the site of the future Berlin airport began on 21 March 2011. The hangar, covering an area of more than 12,000 m², will be completed by the time the new airport opens on 3 June 2012.
