BOLOGNA AIRPORT HITS NEW TRAFFIC RECORD: MORE THAN 7.6 MILLION PASSENGERS (+11.5%) IN 2016

London, Paris and Catania the most popular destinations

Bologna Airport ended 2016 with a new traffic record: for the first time in its history it reached more than 7.6 million passengers (7,680,992)*, a growth of 11.5% on 2015.

Monday 5th September was the busiest day ever: 29,633 arriving and departing passengers whereas the threshold of 7 million yearly passengers was first surpassed on 23rd November.

2016 traffic growth was driven both by domestic (1,917,501, a 12.1% increase) and international passengers (5,765,046, +11.3%) - the latter accounting for 75% of the total market share.

Last year's excellent results were mainly due to new scheduled connections, such as Catania operated by Alitalia and Düsseldorf by Air Berlin, as well as Dubai by Emirates completing its first year of operations. The positive trend was also confirmed by the strengthening of some already existing important connections, namely Madrid, Rome Fiumicino, Bucharest, Cagliari, Moscow and Copenhagen.

As regards the most popular destinations, London reached the top of the ranking (over 550 thousand passengers considering the three airports Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted) followed by Paris (almost 420 thousand passengers overall for Charles de Gaulle, Beauvais and Orly). Catania ranked third delivering a sound increase of 26.4% with over 320 thousand passengers. The other "Top Ten" destinations were: Madrid, Frankfurt, Barcelona, Palermo, Rome Fiumicino, Bucharest and Amsterdam.

Total flight movements were 69,697*, increasing by 7.9% compared to 2015. Air cargo traffic performed also well (+21.4%) reaching 37,434 tons.

In December 2016 traffic reached 549,441* passengers (+4.8%), 5,057* movements (-1.0%) and 3,290 tons of air freight (+12.7%).

* * * Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, classified as a "strategic airport" in the centre-north area of the National Airports Plan prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, is now the seventh biggest Italian airport by passenger numbers, with nearly 7 million passengers in 2015, of which 75% on international flights (Source: Assaeroporti). Located in the heart of the Emilian food valley and the automotive and packaging industrial districts, the airport has a catchment area of about 10.7 million inhabitants and around 47,000 companies, with a strong propensity to exports and internationalisation and with commercial expansion policies to Eastern Europe and Asia.

In 2015 102 destinations were served from Bologna: the presence at the airport of some of the largest airlines in Europe along with some of the leading low-cost carriers and the close link with European continental hubs make Bologna Italy's forth airport in for global connectivity (Source: ICCSAI - Fact Book 2016) and the first in Europe in terms of growth of connectivity in the decade from 2004 to 2014 (Source: ACI Europe Airport Connectivity Report 2004-2014).

As for airport infrastructure, the airport has recently completed a major upgrade and expansion of the passenger terminal, while the capacity of aeronautical infrastructure is deemed adequate to accommodate the expected growth over the coming years. The company's aim is to make Bologna Airport one of the most modern and functional in Italy, an important gateway to the city and region.
