The protests, which have led to the deaths of 48 people, began in December when the then-President, Pedro Castillo, was ousted.

Protests supporting Castillo quickly turned into a wider anti-government movement following the violent crackdown on protests. Protesters, who have erected barricades throughout the country, are now calling for President Boluarte to resign, early elections, and a new constitution.

The calls are more fierce in the south, where the deaths have torn open wounds brimming with a legacy of inequality, racism, and violence.
