Tanzania's gold export volume rose by 3.9% in the second quarter this year compared with the prior quarter on higher volume, despite global prices shrinking, the country's central bank said Monday.

Volume rose to 9,531.7 kilograms in the second quarter from 9,174.7 kilograms in the prior quarter, and by 9.3% from 8,723.5 kilograms in the same quarter last year, the bank said in its quarterly review.

The value of gold sold rose by 5.6% to $469.2 million from $443.6 million in the first quarter, and from $444.0 million in the same period of 2022, it said.

Global prices fell to $770.7 a troy ounce in the second quarter this year from $853.1 a troy ounce in the prior quarter, and from $1,209.8 a troy ounce in the prior-year quarter, the bank said.

Gold export value accounts for nearly half of all Tanzania's goods exports.
