Emergency gas roadworks on the A36 are causing heavy traffic around Salisbury and diversions are in place.

The works are being carried out by SGN and they have provided this detail on their website which was posted on 23 January. You can also follow updates on their twitter account @SGNgas

  • We're carrying out emergency repairs to our gas main in the A36 near the Southampton Road Retail Park. To ensure everyone's safety around our work area, we need to temporarily close the A36 southbound between College Roundabout by Wiltshire College and Bourne Way Roundabout by the Tesco Superstore from 7pm this evening.

A signed diversion will be put in place for southbound traffic heading in the direction of Southampton via the A338 (Downton Road), A31 and A36. Northbound traffic travelling along the A36 towards Salisbury will be unaffected.

We'll be maintaining vehicular access to all businesses along the northbound carriageway, including B&Q, Matalan and Screwfix, as well as Bourne Retail Park. These businesses can be accessed via Bourne Valley Roundabout.

However, there will be no vehicular access to Southampton Road Retail Park and the Esso Garage during our emergency work, both of which are on the southbound carriageway. We will maintain pedestrian access to these businesses at all times.

This is a complex repair and the southbound carriageway is likely to remain closed until the end of the week. However, our engineers will be working 24 hours a day to complete this repair as quickly as possible. We appreciate this is an extremely busy route and we'll do all we can to reopen the A36 as soon as possible.
