West Sussex County Council : Work starts soon on Felpham traffic-calming scheme

A scheme aimed at reducing the speed of traffic in and around Downview Road in Felpham is scheduled to start on January 15.

Concerns were raised about vehicle speeds in the area and pairs of mini speed bumps, known as 'speed cushions', will be installed in Downview Road, Outerwyke Road and Wroxham Way.

Bob Lanzer, county council Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: 'Unfortunately, there will be disruption to local traffic as drivers will need to give way to each other passing the works, and temporary traffic signals may be used at times.

'Parking will be temporarily suspended at specific locations and there will be some noise. However, we will do all we can to keep this to a minimum and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience.'

Responding to local concern, the Downview Road area was put forward by the local County Councillor and Felpham Parish Council in a list of sites they wanted improved. Local consultation and formal advertisement of the proposals led to the decision to go ahead with the traffic calming.

The scheme will cost about £80,000 and is being funded entirely through developers' contributions (known as section 106 contributions).

It is estimated that the work will be finished by February 23, although this could change due to weather and other factors, such as equipment breakdown.

Proposals for work in other parts of Felpham have also been progressed, some implemented and others are in the pipeline.
