The United States Fire Administration (USFA) has unveiled a new series of broadcast and radio public service announcements (PSAs) designed to help people appreciate exactly how fire puts their homes and loved ones at risk.

“These new PSAs are a great way for the fire service to engage their communities about the need to take steps to improved home fire safety,” says USFA. “The PSAs also provide high-quality educational content that will be appreciated by local media outlets.”

The PSAs are available in :15 and :30 spots for broadcast, Internet and radio use at http://www.plowsharegroup.com/media_downloads/fema-usfa.php. They underscore the following home fire safety messages:

  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms.
  • Practice an escape plan for you and your loved ones.
  • Keep children at least three feet away from anything that gets hot.
  • Always stay in the kitchen when cooking with high temperatures.
  • Keep heaters three feet away from anything that can burn.

“What could you lose in a home fire?” That blunt and vital question opens the PSAs, followed by powerful video of routine, yet poignant family life. The PSAs illustrate what’s truly at risk when a fire breaks out –- home, possessions, memories. The PSAs end with a caution that will resonate: “Don’t let your world go up in smoke.”

Fire safety artwork makes the key messages of the “Up In Smoke” campaign understandable for any population. Because each visual addresses a single concept, the messages are easy to digest and to remember.

“Up In Smoke” is part of USFA’s broader national initiative, Fire Is Everyone’s Fight™, which aims to reduce home fire injuries, deaths and property loss by changing how people think about fire and fire prevention.
