Universities and research centres are key actors for developing vibrant and sustainable economies by developing competences and innovation.
At the same time, focus is growing on the expectation that higher education institutions contribute to their 'third mission' by contributing to the knowledge transfer and innovation of their societies and economies.
A variety of initiatives and best practices already exist in the region for incentivising the creation of new start-ups, developing internship and industrial doctorates programmes, developing employable and digital skills among students and researchers.
Nevertheless, further attention needs to be brought to them in order to facilitate replication and upscale of positive initiatives.
In this framework, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), has been published as a useful handbook on this matter by sharing best practices too, in collaboration with, among the others, UNIMED and the UNIMED partners of the SubNetwork on Employability.
These ones include career services and internships, skills for employability, teaching and learning, mobility, collaborative doctorates, partnership for innovation and capacity development.
