The annual Land Use and Planning Conference on Friday, January 21, 2022, is a leading source of information on California land use legislation, case law, and emerging issues that frame a range of property development practices in the nation's most populous state.

Now in its 36th year, the UCLA Extension conference provides decision-makers, public officials, attorneys, planners, developers, and others, with a big-picture view of current land use law and planning practices, with experts offering succinct and provocative updates on core state and federal case law and legislation.

At this year's conference are two of California's influential business advocates, Lucy Dunn, President and CEO of the Orange County Business Council, and Jim Wunderman, President and CEO of the Bay Area Council. Their keynote discussion presents insights into the top issues impacting the Golden State and perspectives on statewide policy issues impacting every sector of the world's sixth-largest economy.

"The conference's unique cross-disciplinary approach explores the full range of perspectives drawn from land use law, planning, development, and environmental policy and demonstrates how these factors influence the day-to-day work of planners, developers, environmental regulators, and attorneys," said Stephanie Hoekstra, Interim Director, Humanities & Sciences Department, and Conference Chair.

This year's agenda covers "CEQA 2021- A Year in Review," with panelists Kevin Bundy of Counsel, Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger and Tina Thomas, Founding Partner, Thomas Law Group; "Wildfire, Drought, and Flooding Dynamics in California: What Can We Do on the Ground?" moderated by Ken Alex, Director, Governor's Office of Planning and Research, and panelists Alex Hall, Professor, UCLA, Director of Center for Climate Science, and Heather Blair, Senior Environmental Project Manager, Ascent; "Beyond ADUs: How Do We Deliver Meaningful Housing Supplies Throughout California?" moderated by David Smith, Partner, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, and panelists Bill Fulton, Director, Kinder Institute for Urban Research, Rice University, Randall Lewis, Executive Vice President, Lewis Operating Corp, and Layne Marceau, Division President, Shea Homes; "Planning, Zoning, and Development Law: What's New from California's Judicial and Legislative Branches?" moderated by Alisha Winterswyk, Partner, Best Best & Krieger LLP, and panelists Matt Klopfenstein, Legislative and Legal Advisor, California Advisors, LLC, and Todd Leishman, of Counsel, Best Best & Krieger LLP; and "Quick Hits 2022," which will address facts on the topics of the day with co-chairs David Smith and Alisha Winterswyk.

"Everything from new policies set forth by the Biden administration, to climate change and California's housing crisis have caused a dynamic shift in land use and planning," said David Smith, Partner, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips and Conference Co-Chair. "Panelists cover these important updates and more, and look ahead into 2022 and beyond with comments about what these changes portend for the business, planning, and policy communities."
