Monticello, NY - With temperatures forecast to again plunge below zero, Sullivan County is keeping its two community warming centers operational through at least noon on Monday, January 8.
Located in Monticello at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center at 5 Jefferson Street and in Liberty at the United Methodist Church at 170 North Main Street, the centers were initially slated to close tomorrow.
'The bone-chilling cold has not let up, and our warming centers have hosted 10 people over various nights, with more stopping in during the day,' said County Manager Josh Potosek. 'We encourage anyone needing warmth and shelter to come to one of the centers, which will remain open and staffed by volunteers day and night.'
As a reminder, the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) - which can provide funds for fuel and heating system repair/replacement - is ongoing, and aid for emergency heating situations is available starting today, January 2. For more information, call 845-807-0142.
