The new signs have had a smoke free message incorporated into them which asks park users not to smoke in or near play areas.

A number of local authorities have introduced Smoke Free Play areas as part of their wider smoking control strategies to protect children from second hand smoke.

In Stockport smoke free play areas have been introduced via a voluntary code rather than by a legal ban which we hope all park users will support.

Councillor Sheila Bailey, Executive member for Communities and Housing said: 'There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke causes numerous health problems in infants and children. Children's play areas should be smoke free areas'.
