STORY: :: 'Are you still talking to the Dutch PM?' Biden and Starmer joke about Euro 2024 semi-final

:: July 10, 2024

:: Washington, D.C.

:: Keir Starmer, British Prime Minister

BIDEN: "I kind of see you guys (United Kingdom) as the knot tying the transatlantic alliance together. The closer you are with Europe, the more you're engaged, the more you're... because we know where you are, we know where we are, both countries."

STARMER: "No, I think that's absolutely right. And now we go into a cup final [in Euro 2024] on Sunday on top of all of that. I actually watched, I began to watch the game with the Netherlands Prime Minister. But we left at 1-1."

BIDEN: "Well you guys are still talking to one another?"

STARMER: "We haven't seen each other since, so we'll have to see."

BIDEN: "Anyway. We've got a lot to talk about. Thank you all for coming in."

The two world leaders were meeting at the White House during a NATO Summit being hosted in Washington D.C. on the transatlantic alliance's 75th anniversary.

Biden described the United Kingdom as the "knot" tying together the transatlantic NATO alliance and said that the two countries must continue to cooperate. Starmer agreed with that but joked he had just watched part of the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands with his Dutch counterpart, Dick Schoof.

Biden smiled and jokingly asked whether Starmer and Schoof were still speaking to each other with the British PM quickly replying that he hadn't seen Schoof since the match.
