Vienna, 2018-01-09 - The month of November 2017 closed with a rise in overnight stays by 3.4% to 4.82 million, according to Statistics Austria's latest preliminary data. This is the highest result for November since the beginning of statistical records. The overnight stays of non-resident tourists increased by 4.3% and reached 2.70 million, the nights spent by resident tourists increased by 2.2% to 2.12 million.

The highest relative rises of non-resident overnight stays were reached by tourists from Denmark (+19.8%), Romania (+13.7%) and Russia (+13.5%). Also the number of overnight stays by guests from the most important countries of origin, Germany, Switzerland/Liechtenstein and Italy rose compared to the corresponding month last year (+3.5%, +0.5% and +5.2%). From the other most important countries of origin, only overnight stays of guests from Sweden (-12.3%), France (-3.5%) and Belgium (-1.5%) showed declines compared to November 2016. Nights spent in commercial holiday dwellings (+20.8%) showed the most dynamic rise of all accommodation establishments, while in 5-/4-star hotels the increase amounted to 3.6%.

Furthermore, the number of arrivals rose in November 2017 by 3.7% and reached 1.98 million.

For the first eleven months of 2017 (January to November), 133.92 million nights spent were registered, which means a growth of 2.2% compared to the same time period in 2016. Increases were recorded in the number of nights spent by residents (+1.0%) as well as by non-residents (+2.6%). With a rise of 3.6% to 39.62 million guests, the number of arrivals reached a new record value as well. Increases were reported for arrivals by residents (+1.6%) as well as by non-residents (+4.5%). By way of comparison: For the whole year 2016, a total of 140.88 million overnight stays and 41.46 million arrivals were reported, whereby in December 2016 about 9.82 million overnight stays and 3.21 million arrivals were observed.

Methodological information:Within the scope of the monthly overnight statistics, the arrivals and nights spent are provided by rented tourist accommodation establishments in those communities which have more than 1 000 overnight stays per year. Of the total of 2 100 Austrian communities 1 558 reporting communities transmit data monthly to Statistics Austria. The survey units are commercial and private tourist accommodation establishments, which transmit their data to the relevant reporting community by means of the 'Statistische Meldeblatt' or the 'Betriebsbogen'.
