EXPERT ALERTS:

Gender Stereotyping
Sarah Murnen
Samuel B. Cummings Professor of Psychology
Kenyon College, Ohio
"Children learn gender stereotype behaviors through observing in the culture and having their own gender behavior rewarded. Things that get repeated in culture -- for example, through television -- come to be seen as normal, so if you see extreme gender roles, you might think this is just the way things always have been and always should be."
Murnen is a sought-after authority on gender issues in the national media. She is a social psychologist who has done extensive research on gender roles and body dissatisfaction.

Fasting-Mimicking Diets
Valter Longo
Chairman and Founder, L-Nutra
Director, USC Longevity Institute
"Fasting done periodically is a very powerful and natural way to help the body first recover from the incremental damages inflicted by an unhealthy lifestyle and then to rejuvenate the body's cells and systems. Fasting-mimicking diets can enable people to live longer, healthier lives."
Based in Los Angeles, Longo can discuss aging, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. He can also discuss the benefits of fasting-mimicking diets. He is corresponding author of a new aging-related study to be released this month (January 2017) in the Journal of Translational Medicine; details will be released under embargo only. Longo is fluent in Italian.

Top Four Mental Health Resolutions for 2017
Dr. Frieda Birnbaum
Research Psychologist, Psychoanalyst
Birnbaum shares the top four mental health resolutions for 2017: "1) Face one fear: When we challenge ourselves and when we push out of our comfort zones, we grow. Write down a list of all of your fears (public speaking, the dark, etc.) and make a concerted attempt to face one of them. When you confront fear successfully, it can affect all aspects of your life for the better as well as give you a confidence boost. 2) Detach from social media: Some people regularly post faux versions of who they really are. In 2017, try taking a break from social media or use it a lot less. There are several recent studies that tie excessive social media use to depression. 3) Reconnect: Reach out to friends, relatives or even acquaintances that you haven't spoken with in a long time. It will make you feel good. Also, try taking up a hobby or an activity you enjoyed when you were younger. Reconnect to people, places, and activities that made you feel happy. 4) Forgive and seek forgiveness: If someone from your past or present has hurt you, do whatever you can to take steps towards forgiving them (even if they're not seeking forgiveness). A lot of inner anguish and pain can result from the negative emotions we feel about others. In addition to forgiving others, try to forgive yourself for things you are feeling guilty about. If you have hurt others, seek them out and tell them how sorry you are. By doing this you may not only be bringing a substantial amount of peace to them but, to you as well."
Based in the New York metro area, Dr. Birnbaum is the author of "Life Begins at 60: A New View on Motherhood, Marriage, and Reinventing Ourselves." She's an expert on depression, women's issues, and attaining happiness.
