It's not typical to see a Catholic priest behind a DJ booth.

But it's where Guilherme Peixoto - Portugal's DJ priest - shines.

He rose to fame playing electronic dance music near his church in a tiny Portuguese village.

Now the 49-year-old is playing at some of the world's best nightclubs...

With the aim of spreading hope through music.

"Creating a healthy space at night is always a big challenge and that starts with the music you choose, the music you play, the energy you transmit, the message you share. This is a very big responsibility for DJs and, of course, for me as a priest."

Hours after the end of the party, Peixoto performs a more traditional task for a priest - officiating a wedding.

His passion for music started while he was in seminary... and grew as a military chaplain.

In 2010, during a trip to Afghanistan, he organized social events for soldiers and began exploring the world of DJing.

Peixoto says he sees overlap between the altar and the dance floor.

"In the parish, outside the parish, music unites us and we see this at a party, in a club, when people are dancing, they are happy, they are happy. // It doesn't matter what religion each person is, whether they have faith or not. The dance floor ends up being an environment of peace and harmony and people are also receptive to a message of faith, of hope."

Last year, Peixoto performed during Pope Francis' visit to Portugal for World Youth Day.

The pontiff has even blessed a pair of his headphones.

The next stops for Peixoto's mix of faith and festivity:

Concerts coming up in Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
