Italia Startup Visa - the experimental programme launched in June 2014 that makes it easier for entrepreneurial talents from all around the world to get a self-employment visa for Italy, if they wish to set up an innovative startup company (as defined by the Italian Startup Act) - received 29 requests for participation between September and December 2016. In spite of a slight decrease compared to the previous four-month period, which registered a record-breaking 37 applications, the programme closes 2016 with an unprecedented number of 99 applications, a steep rise from the 62 received throughout the first 18 months of operations.

The 161 applicants to ISV come from 32 different countries, with Malaysia, Taiwan and Turkey just added to the list. Russia remains the country where the largest share of applicants come from (41); China leaps to second place, with 20 applications (18 submitted during 2016), surpassing the United States, now tied with Pakistan at 17.
71% of candidates are men, and 83.5% have attained a Bachelor's degree or higher, typically in engineering (27 cases). The average age at time of application is 35.6years, ranging from 20 to 65.

In 32 cases, the application was presented jointly from an entrepreneurial team formed by 2, 3 or 4 people, involving 83 candidates overall. Among those who submitted their application individually, 19 entrepreneurs did not apply to set up a new company from scratch: instead, they intended to join an existing innovative startup, with the purpose of becoming a shareholder and playing an entrepreneurial role in it.

Most successful applicants decided to settle in Lombardy (39, of whom 23 are based in Milan). Other regions with more than 10 startup visa holders are Lazio (11, all in Rome), Piedmont (11), and Veneto (10).

The Four-monthly Report on the Italia Startup Visa and Hub programmes, lastly updated on 31 December 2016, is now available on the website of the Ministry of Economic Development, both in an Italian and an English version.
