NXP Joins The Connected Lighting Alliance January 17, 2013

First semiconductor company to join wireless lighting initiative

Eindhoven, Netherlands, December 20, 2012 - NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ: NXPI) today announced that it has become a member of The Connected Lighting Alliance - www.theconnectedlightingalliance.org. The Alliance, founded by leading companies in the lighting industry, promotes the global adoption and growth of wireless lighting solutions by supporting open standards. The alliance strives to align the lighting industry on a unified approach towards wireless lighting connectivity and create a low risk choice for end users.

NXP has a long-established position as one of the leading suppliers of semiconductor devices to the lighting industry and facilitated the adoption of smart lighting by providing drivers for all types of lamps. This enables manufacturers to sell efficient, long-lasting smart lighting solutions with advanced capabilities such as dimming and the ability to set different ambient lighting "scenes". NXP has also developed a full range of ZigBee© stacks, including Smart Energy, RF4CE and LightLink, and created its own wireless lighting control system, which integrates both advanced driver ICs and single chip wireless communications with an IPv6-based wireless network stack and a dedicated application layer suitable for all types of building automation systems.

Pieter Hooijmans, vice president of R&D and strategy at NXP Semiconductors, said, "The Internet of Things is set to become one of the next major growth areas in the consumer market, with internet-connected smart lighting spearheading its introduction into the home. We believe that a stable, shared platform will trigger industry growth. Therefore, we see a clear need to participate in developing a unified approach toward wireless connectivity. The experience and knowledge we bring in both connected devices and lighting drivers will provide valuable engineering and marketing insight as The Connected Lighting Alliance moves forward."

Simon den Uijl, secretary general of The Connected Lighting Alliance, commented, "Support from the semiconductor industry is vital to facilitate the shift towards wireless lighting solutions, particularly in ensuring the provision of the chips and software needed to implement a standard that we believe is best fit for purpose. NXP is the first semiconductor company to join The Connected Lighting Alliance, and we are glad that they have also taken a seat in our Board of Directors."
