Jan 24 (Reuters) - The National Public Radio (NPR) named former Wikimedia Foundation chief Katherine Maher as CEO and president of the United States-based broadcaster on Wednesday, as it looks to attract new audiences.

Maher, who has experience in leading public interest institutions, will succeed veteran executive and journalist John Lansing effective March 25, who has been serving as NPR CEO and president since 2019.

"The board searched for a leader with the ability to reach audiences on new and existing platforms and leverage the network of local organizations," said Jennifer Ferro, chair of the NPR board.

NPR is a nonprofit media organization that boasts of 44 million weekly audience across its platforms and has 1.5 million weekly app users, according to its website.
