Reforming the U.S. Coal Leasing Program

ByMike Bloomberg -JAN. 17, 2016

The Obama administration's decision to reform the U.S. coal leasing program is a welcome and long overdue step to remove one of the biggest market distortions in history: the decades-long subsidization of air pollution and climate change by the federal government. Coal, the dirtiest source of energy and the single greatest contributor to global warming, imposes huge costs on our economy, human health, and the environment. But rather than account for these costs in the fees it charges coal companies to extract from public lands, the federal government has effectively subsidized continued coal burning, tilting the playing field away from alternative, cleaner sources of energy in favor of artificially cheap coal. If we're serious about climate change, that has to stop. This announcement will help ensure it does.
