MGE Energy : Recognized for Environmental Leadership

Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), our utility subsidiary, is being recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) under its Green Tier program. The voluntary program recognizes companies for their superior environmental performance. MGE is the only electric utility, and one of only seven Wisconsin companies, to be certified at the highest level of Green Tier.

Expanding scope of Green Tier certification

MGE is entering into another five-year contract with the DNR that will expand the scope of its Green Tier certification.

MGE has achieved the highest level of Green Tier status by consistently exceeding the standards set in the Environmental Management System (EMS) established for its Blount Generating Station in downtown Madison. An EMS is a continuous improvement process that evaluates, prioritizes and manages environmental risks.

Activities at Blount included the retirement of some units and the conversion of remaining coal-fired units to natural gas.

Under the renewed contract, the company's goal is to expand the scope of the EMS from Blount Generating Station to all MGE operations by the end of 2018.

'The companywide expansion of our EMS is another example of MGE's commitment to cost-savings and sustainability,' said Jeff Jaeckels, MGE Director of Safety and Environmental Affairs.

MGE was the only utility to be a founding partner in a 2002 DNR pilot program, the Environmental Cooperative Agreement (ECA). In 2012, the ECA program rolled into Green Tier.
