Exporters are among the worst hit, along with defensive sectors such as healthcare and consumer staples.

New data from lender Nationwide showed that the UK annual house price growth was down to 2.8% in December from 4.4% in the previous month. Economists polled by Reuters expected a growth of 2.3%.

The year 2022 overall has been a strong one for the FTSE 100, which is one of the few indexes to end in positive territory, earnings 1.2% over the past 12 months.

It has been doing well thanks to commodities, which is the best performing asset class for the second year in a row. Mega profits from Shell (+45%) and BP Plc (+44%) as well as strong gains from Glencore (+48%) and Rio Tinto (+19%) kept the FTSE 100 afloat.
