In December 2016 compared with December 2015:

Visitor arrivals (494,200) were up 49,300. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • Australia (up 16,300)
  • United States (up 9,200)
  • United Kingdom (up 3,300).

Overseas trips by New Zealand residents (281,100) were up 35,400. The biggest changes were in departures to:

  • Australia (up 10,400)
  • China (up 3,300)
  • India (up 2,900).

Permanent and long-term arrivals (10,700) were up 600.

Permanent and long-term departures (5,700) were up 400.

In December 2016, seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 6,000 migrants.

In the December 2016 year compared with the December 2015 year:

  • visitor arrivals numbered 3.50 million, up 368,000 (12 percent)
  • New Zealand residents departed on 2.62 million trips overseas, up 206,400 (9 percent)
  • permanent and long-term arrivals were 127,300, up 5,400 (4 percent)
  • permanent and long-term departures were 56,700, down 300 (0.5 percent)
  • net gain in migrants was 70,600.
