Shares of energy companies rose as traders bet that a recent resurgence in oil prices would continue.

Oil futures rose 6.5% to $78.01 a barrel, as continued escalation of tensions in the Middle East and production hitches in the U.S. drove the price to its largest two-week gain since October.

For the week, natural gas futures rose 7.7%, giving the heating commodity three gains out of the last four weeks as winter storms blew through much of the U.S.
