The 17th of December, the political party S&D achieved to establish common EU standards to improve waste management by the Parliament Negotiator, MEP Simona Bonafè. An agreement was reached by the Council and the European Parliament which ensured that the Waste Package will be supported by the MS with settled minimum thresholds for recycling municipal waste (65%), plastic packaging (55%) by 2030 and a target to reduce landfill to a maximum of 10% by 2035 (established for the first time). In comparison with the objectives of the Commission, 5 years later than the proposal made.

According to Simona Bonafè these measures will benefit the society while being the transition towards a zero-waste circular economy in which MS will first focused in waste prevention achieving a 89 million tonnes of food waste reduction produced in the EU. Besides this, an important achievement has been made, as mentioned by Bonafè 'the most important achievement is the simplification and improvement of definitions and harmonised calculation methods for recycling rates' which was also highlighted by Kathleen Van Brempt, S&D vice-president for sustainability, stating that the MS have different situations and that it is an achievement to have settled more balanced objectives.
