WIESBADEN- In the first three quarters of 2012, the social insurance funds recorded a financial surplus (as defined in public finance statistics) of 5.9 billion euros in cash terms. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this financial surplus was nearly as high as the surplus recorded in the first three quarters of 2011 (6.0 billion euros).

The social insurance funds' revenue totalled 392.8 billion euros in the first three quarters of 2012. Compared with the same period a year earlier, this was an increase of 1.8%. This development was mainly due to the continued growth of employment subject to social insurance contributions.
